Frequent Ask Questions

Are you selling juice?

No. But my brewed sports drink of half Gatorade X-Factor Lemon-Lime+Strawberry and half green tea and chamomile tea may someday have a following.

Why the name Compass Juice ?

I wanted a name associated with the adventure of the great outdoors since the site is for sharing my photos and travel tips. It was fun formulating names and hard to stop. I started with the themes of: wilderness adventure, mountaineering, mountains, and last but not least chocolate. Unfortunately the word chocolate has so many letters, but who knows? Someday I may have a site called “Mark'sGlobalChocolateAdventuresTours.com”. Want to join me on a beautiful mountain adventure and descend to a chalet for a rich slice of Black Forest cake?

Is there such a substance as Compass Juice?

Inside the compass manufacturing community some refer to the liquid that they place inside compasses as compass juice. In the organic realm there is the Compass plant (pilotweed) that grows in the Midwestern USA and reaches the height of 10 feet with yellow heads that look like Sun Flowers. The lower leaves tend to line up edgewise in a north-south direction. In regards to whether juice is extracted from it, I have not come across such information.

What is the liquid inside compasses and its purpose?

Compasses are filled with a non-freezable liquid mixture of alcohol and water or glycerin and water. This liquid mixture floats the needle and at the same time slows the movement of the needle so that it does not constantly swing from side to side when the compass unit is not held perfectly still such is on a swaying ship.
